i put kayaks on my new 2-month-old Sequoia's roof rack. no front tie-downs so I got aFE tow hooks instead of using the bumper. right side went fine but the left bolt was tough to remove. when I put it back it felt stiff then snapped halfway in no power tools just my arm. dealer said the nut's tac-weld to the frame broke. be careful with tow hooks that weld can fail and there is no easy fix except a new frame. my 2024 Sequoia's totaled now since the repair costs more than the car's worth.

Factory tow hook welds can fail, so be careful! Always tighten to the proper torque and don't overtighten. For kayak transport, think about using aftermarket tie-downs or hitch carriers.

If you'd known a simple tow-hook install could risk breaking a weld and potentially total a brand-new Sequoia, would you still have gone DIY, or left it entirely to the dealer?

I'm curios, who does the dealer blame for this? I mean breaking a weld with your hand means it was a poor job from the factory, so it cannot be you to blame for this? Also, it's under warranty, ir the dealer decided to void it?
